Cyber Attack On Immi Account

The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed it was the victim of a Denial of Service (DDoS) cyber-attack, preventing people from temporarily accessing online visa and citizenship applications. The attack came after a pro-Russia hacker group said in a Telegram post on Thursday night that it would target the department’s website over Australia’s support for Ukraine.  The group claiming responsibility stated in another post on Telegram that it had also attacked the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) website.

A DDoS attack is designed to force a website or online service offline. This is accomplished by flooding the target website with many requests, consuming its capacity and rendering it unable to respond to legitimate requests. It has been alleged that no data was accessed by the threat actor.

The Department is currently still experiencing intermittent performance issues on its website, however, has been working to restore the website after the implementation of a cyber incident response arrangement.
