English Language Requirements for Graduates

Student and Temporary Graduate visa applications lodged after 23rd March 2024 are subject to new
English Language Requirements as part of the Migration Reforms announced in December 2023.
Changes to English Language Requirements are outlined below:
Student visas

 Increase of minimum score from 5.5 to 6 for IELTS test score
 Increase of minimum score from 4.5 to 5.0 required to undertake a packaged ELICOS
 No change for students studying English only through ELICOS
 5.5 (or equivalent) test score required for students undertaking university foundation or
pathway programs that deliver reputable English language training

Temporary Graduate visa
 Increase of minimum score from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent) with a minimum score of 5.5 for each
test component (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
 Decrease of test validity window from 3 years to 1 year, meaning Temporary Graduate visa
applicants will need to provide evidence that they have completed an English language test at
least 1 year immediately before the date of application

The changes are intended to provide international students with a positive education experience and
assist in their transition to either a subsequent course or entry to the workforce.
