New English Language Requirements for 485 Visa Applicants

Following the changes implemented on March 23, 2024, in the application process for the Temporary Graduate visa, there is a notable adjustment in the English proficiency requirements. Applicants who lodge their applications on or after this date are subject to an enhanced English proficiency criterion. Specifically, the minimum acceptable score on tests such as IELTS rises from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with each component of the test, namely reading, writing, speaking, and listening, necessitating a minimum score of 5.5.

However, it’s important to note that there are exemptions to this heightened requirement. Passport holders from Hong Kong and British National Overseas (BNO) are not obliged to meet the increased minimum English language requirement. For this particular cohort, the English proficiency standard remains at IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent).

Furthermore, another significant alteration pertains to the validity period of English language test results for Temporary Graduate visa applications. Previously set at three years, this validity period has now been shortened to one year. Hence, applicants are required to provide evidence demonstrating that they have completed an English language test no more than one year immediately preceding the date of the visa application.

In summary, for individuals seeking the 485 visa, eligibility is contingent upon either holding specific passports or demonstrating proficiency in the English language through the designated tests.
