NSW NOMINATION PROCESS

About NSW Nomination

If you want to live, work, and study in specific rural areas of New South Wales (NSW) for 5 years, you can apply for NSW nomination for a skilled migrant visa. There are two ways to get this nomination:

Pathway 1 – Apply directly to a Regional Development Australia (RDA) office.

Pathway 2 – Be invited to apply by Investment NSW.

For Pathway 1, there are two options:

  • Stream A – If you’ve been working in a rural NSW area for the past year and have a job in a specific occupation, you can apply under this stream.
  • Stream B – If your skills are needed in rural NSW, you can apply under this stream.

Nomination Criteria

To qualify for NSW nomination, you need to meet the eligibility requirements set by Home Affairs for the visa, including having a skill in an eligible occupation. You also need to meet the specific requirements for the pathway and stream you choose.

Note: You can’t get NSW nomination if you’ve been nominated by NSW for a visa before.

Pathway 1 Criteria

Stream A – If you want to apply through this stream:

  • You must currently live and work in a designated rural area of NSW for the last year.
  • Your job during the last year should match your nominated occupation.
  • You should have worked for the same rural NSW employer.
  • You need to be paid at least $53,900 per year (or prorated if you work less than 38 hours per week) in your occupation.
  • Your nominated occupation must be eligible for the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491).

Stream B – If you want to apply through this stream:

  • You must have skills in an occupation listed in the Stream B skills list and eligible for the visa.
  • You need to be living in NSW or offshore for at least three months.

Pathway 2 Criteria

To be considered for NSW nomination under Pathway 2:

  • Your occupation should be in the Pathway 2 skills list and eligible for the visa.
  • You need to be living in NSW or offshore for at least three months.
  • You must have submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect specifically seeking nomination for the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491) in NSW only.

Invitation Rounds for Pathway 2

NSW holds invitation rounds throughout the year, but the dates are not fixed. They are not announced beforehand, so you can’t predict when you’ll be invited. Meeting the minimum criteria doesn’t guarantee an invitation.

It’s competitive, so consider other migration options instead of waiting for an invitation.

Nomination Process

How you apply or get considered for NSW nomination depends on your pathway:

For Pathway 1:

  • Confirm your visa eligibility with Home Affairs.
  • Make sure you meet all eligibility requirements for your chosen stream.
  • Complete an EOI in SkillSelect specifically seeking NSW nomination for the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491).

  • Apply for NSW nomination using their online form.
  • Wait up to eight weeks for the outcome.

For Pathway 2:

  • Confirm your visa eligibility with Home Affairs.
  • Ensure you meet all the pathway eligibility requirements.
  • Complete an EOI in SkillSelect specifically seeking NSW nomination for the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491).
  • Wait for an invitation to apply (but note that many may not get invited).
